Upon the dawn of ages, Divinity created all that is and tore asunder the light and dark. Divinity gazed upon the purity of the light and was pleased. Divinity’s brother, Misery, turned away from the light, shielding his eyes. Misery looked into the darkness and found a refuge, fleeing from his brother and the harsh light. From within the caliginous shade, Misery scrutinized his brother as Divinity proceeded to create the heavens and the earth. Misery became jealous and dismayed as Divinity worked miracles that Misery never could, creating beauty upon the earth.
Then Divinity placed humankind on the land and Misery came to know passionate fury as he watched Divinity fawn over and care for the people. Knowing he could never attain the happiness experienced daily by Divinity’s people, Misery allowed himself to be consumed by loathing and envy. In a fit of rage, Misery called forth a curse to raze the happiness of Divinity and His followers. Misery summoned a horde of intangible, shifting creatures of shadow from the blackest depths of the night. Embodying the deepest fears and darkest potential of humanity’s corruptibility, these horrific Nightmares marshalled forth from the fallen’s fuscous fortress to swarm across the land.
Humanity’s dreams were invaded and overshadowed by Misery’s Nightmares; thus hope and joy were replaced by fear and terror. As the voices of His people rose in supplication for reprieve, Divinity fashioned a warrior capable of battling His brothers Nightmares and safeguarding the people’s dreams. Creating His champions from the ether, Divinity bequeathed them the name Dreamkeepers, and dispatched them to fulfill their purpose. A host of gallant warriors sallied forth from the celestial coruscated citadel and descended upon the earth. The Dreamkeepers spread across the land, standing guard over the sleeping places of Divinity’s beloved people. Reiteratively, night came upon the land and verily fierce battle was joined between the hosts of Dreamkeepers and the hordes of Nightmares for the minds of the sleeping.
Divinity’s guardians prevailed and overcame the greater part of Misery’s legion. Divinity smiled and commanded His Dreamkeepers to lock the captured Nightmares away beneath the sleeping places of their charges, where the Nightmares would be closely watched and able to do harm no longer. With Misery unbridled and many Nightmares continuing to run rampant, Divinity extended a promise of protection to His people, commanding His Dreamkeepers to ever stand guard against the intrusions of the Nightmares.
Thus, to this day, Divinity’s protectors perpetually stand guard over us, ever ready to battle the nightmares that assail our dreams. Over the dawn and dusk of ages passing, we have come to know these Dreamkeepers by many different names. But in this age they have come to be known as Teddy Bears.
