Innumerable stars dot the heavens. There are stars big and small, in groups of many and few, both old and young. Among all those, there are two special stars that endlessly circle each other, forever dancing together through the heavens.
The two stars first met over a millennia ago, a little over a year in the life of a star. They had immediately been attracted and quickly ensnared caught in each other’s gravity well. They drew closer began their eternal tango.
She is a small blue dwarf star, he is a red giant. Despite their differences, they focus on the things they have in common. Neither star could be more pleased with their companion.
The stars spin together around a common point. Every day, he holds Little Blue in his gravitational embrace. She keeps Big Red company in the vast emptiness of space.
They were happy.
As the centuries passed in their first millennia together, there were good times and bad, happiness and sorrow. But through the ups and downs they stuck together, never wavering.
One day, their gravitational wells combined together to achieve something miraculous. Together, their gravity was strong enough to attract a stellar nebula. The nebula started to draw closer to them, although it was still a great distance away. Big Red and Little Blue rejoiced and danced with renewed bliss, focused on the nebula. It was a young nebula that was in the process of forming several new stars. Big Red and Little Blue celebrated. While they loved their binary system, they couldn’t wait for some new little stars to join them. Big Red and Little Blue called out to the nebula, urging it come as soon as it could. The nebula, and the forming stars within, continued at their own pace. Big Red and Little Blue loved them though, and knew that the extra time would just give them a better chance to prepare for company.
One day, as their millennial anniversary drew near, Big Red looked down at the trail of matter that stretched from him to her. Big Red had noticed the trail plenty of times, but he had always assumed that the exchange in matter was equal. Today however, Big Red was in a foul mood. For the first time he looked at the exchange with a more critical eye and realized that it was mostly red, with barely any blue in it.
Big Red quickly grew upset. A binary system should mean an equal exchange between the two stars. As he watched the trail over a few decades, it didn’t change. Big Red was giving away more than Little Blue. Big Red didn’t want this discrepancy to come between them, so he didn’t say anything about it. He did drop hints. He tried to subtly ask her to put more into their union, but she didn’t seem to understand.
Big Red continued to drop hint after hint, waiting for their effort to even out and getting more upset with Little Blue when she didn’t reciprocate. He just wanted everything to be equal again, as it should be. He slowly grew a little bitter, despite his best efforts.
One day Big Red was silently orbiting, pretending that everything was alright. In his mind, he rehearsed a speech, or an argument, that would help Little Blue understand the problem without hurting her feelings. He never wanted to hurt Little Blue, but he felt like she was hurting him by always taking and barely giving. He just wanted to fix it so they could have a happy life together.
One day, Big Red, still rehearsing his speech, had an epiphany. Yes, when he looked at the trail, he was still giving off more strength than Little Blue. That wasn’t the only factor in their relationship though. Big Red smiled. He was suddenly filled with love and compassion for Little Blue. Yes, he might be putting more strength into the exchange, but he was okay with that because he was a giant star; he had so much more strength to give. He rejoiced in the fact that he had the strength to give to Little Blue. He loved her more than he could say, and giving her that strength was a great way to prove it.
Along with his joy in serving, Big Red now understood that Little Blue didn’t take without giving. Although she was a small star, she gave off such an incredibly bright and brilliant light. Her light outshone his by more degrees than he could ever calculate. Her light warmed him, it gave him something beautiful to look at in the darkness, and it inspired him to try and shine just a little bit brighter, both for her and their little nebula.
Big Red embraced Little Blue a bit tighter as they continued their dance through space and waited for the nebula to join them. He rejoiced in their union, gladly giving off even more of his strength and reveling in the wonderful light that Little Blue gave back. Big Red had a feeling that although there were going to be more difficult times and terrible challenges, they and their nebula would end up with a Happy Ever After ending.
